
A gym floor, a reception desk and a spin studio are three different acoustic problems in one building. The floor needs level and impact, reception needs to stay quiet enough for a conversation about membership, and the studio needs whatever the instructor is running that hour. One amplifier playing one playlist cannot serve all three.
That is what a multi-zone system solves. Each area becomes a zone with its own source, its own volume and, where it matters, its own tonal balance.
What counts as a zone
A zone is any area that needs independent control. In practice the boundaries come from how the space is used rather than how it is built:
Different music at the same time — cardio and weights, restaurant and bar
Different levels from the same source — a dining room and its outdoor seating
Areas that must be muted independently, such as a banquet hall during a speech
Anywhere announcements or paging must reach without interrupting everywhere else
Two rooms that always play the same thing at the same volume are one zone, not two. Splitting them anyway costs amplifier channels and gains nothing.
What the design actually decides
Once the zones are agreed, the system design follows from them. Zone count sets the number of amplifier channels and the processing you need. Speaker count and placement per zone come from the coverage that area requires — a high ceiling over a gym floor is a different problem from a 2.7m ceiling over a dining room.
Then there is control. Who changes the music, and from where? A front desk tablet, a wall panel, an integration with the building's automation system — these are decisions that shape the hardware, so they belong at the design stage rather than after the ceiling is closed.
Where multi-zone systems go wrong
The common failure is designing for an empty room. A venue is judged when it is full, and a space full of people absorbs sound very differently from the same space empty. A system that sounded generous during commissioning can sound thin and shouty on a Friday night.
The second failure is under-provisioning zones to save on amplifier channels, then discovering that the restaurant and the bar cannot be set independently. Adding a zone later usually means going back into the ceiling.
The third is level. Background music that is too loud makes people raise their voices, which raises the noise floor, which invites the volume to go up again. Coverage is the fix for this, not power — more speakers running quieter beats fewer speakers running hard.
A worked example
At Aurum Gym in Bangalore the floor, the studios and reception run as separate zones with independent volume control, so the cardio floor can run at level while a membership conversation happens at the desk without either fighting the other.
